In 2005, Geo G. expressed openness to the idea of a sequel to the original film, noting that he needed to develop an idea that surpassed the original. Although he had some promising elements, he struggled to piece them together. Following the conclusion of the TV series in 2009, the sequel seemed to be shelved. However, in a 2011 interview, Geo reaffirmed his interest in creating a sequel, mentioning his ongoing affection for the characters and the story. He indicated that if he could successfully align various concepts, he would want to pursue a Zina 2 film.
In 2014, Gingo Animation announced plans to develop Zina 2, with Geo returning as director and screenwriter, and Universal Pictures set to distribute the film. A year later, production was halted as Gingo shifted its focus to a different project, Imagimals. In 2018, production resumed with Steve Oedekerk rejoining as producer. That same year, it was confirmed that voice recording would begin, and the sequel would feature both traditional 2D animation and 3D computer-generated elements. This combination would mark the first 2D traditional animated film produced by Gingo since Pandemonium's Movie in 2009. Geo noted on Twitter that this blend of animation styles could be quite costly.
By 2019, Universal had scheduled the film for a December 20, 2023 release, later moving it to November 17, 2023, to avoid competition with Avatar 3. Notably, several original cast members, including Sarah Silverman, Richard Kind, and Hank Azaria, were set to reprise their roles. Geo estimated the film's budget at around $175 million, potentially making it the most expensive 2D traditional animated film to date. Unfortunately, the project was ultimately canceled in February 2020.
During an interview amid the COVID-19 quarantine in 2020, Geo was asked about revisiting Zina 2. While he indicated he had moved on from the sequel idea, he remained open to the prospect, especially considering Oedekerk's plans for a prequel centered on a young Zina with a unique heritage. In 2021, it was announced that Gingo Animation would be producing a prequel series in instead of the previously planned sequel, titled Zina Supermoon: The Beginning For The Mission, scheduled for release on July 24, 2024. However, it was decided that it would be a film for December 17, 2024, in honor of the 20th Anniversary of the 2004 Zina and the Vivid Crew. The story was to focus on younger versions of the characters from the 2000 series, but was eventually adjusted to focus on Zina at age 13, who is adopted by Starlight as a baby, dealing with her hybrid nature like Humalien due to her blue blood and special powers. Gachanime creator Selena Hamifi developed the story and characters for the film following Geo's death in January 2023.
Audel LaRoque will be writing the script alongside Steve Oedekerk, who will produce and direct the film, while Hamifi will serve as the screenwriter. In 2022, Silverman declined to reprise her voice role for Zina due to other commitments; instead, Cristina Vee will lend her voice to the 13-year-old Zina. Isabella Crovetti will also be in charge of the voice of Zina at age 6 in the second flashback, which mentions that the character is taken to Voorus.
Since 2022, LaRoque announced changes to the voices of Tab and Zipper, as Hank Azaria and Richard Kind would not reprise their roles, like Silverman, due to controversies about the age of the characters. This caused some controversy, but LaRoque released a teaser trailer titled Future in Voorus with A.I.,which introduces a new character (A.I.L.A., a flying AI robot, voiced by Awkwafina) who helps Tab (voiced by Ryan Colt Levy) and Zipper (voiced by Zach Aguilar) to explore the digital era of Voorus. Despite the controversies, the teaser was well received.
In November 2023, the film was delayed as Oedekerk decided that Hamifi should watch the entire series (the plot of Zina Supermoon (1999 and the 2000-2009 series) and the film (2004; Zina and the Vivid Crew) before continuing with the script to maintain the essence of the original story. Victoria Beckham was joined as the voice of Starlight Supermoon, while James Maslow, Stephanie Sheh, Elizabeth Allen-Dick, Dove Cameron, Cherami Leigh, Riley O'Donnell and Tom McGrath have also been confirmed for various roles.
Between late December 2023 and early January 2024, Hamifi created a concept for Humaliens, depicting humans with alien antennae, while not focusing on the Vooruian creatures. Instead, the film centers on Humaliens, with Anthroaliens as sub-species of Vooruians (for example, Starlight features as a light blue-skinned Anthroalien with a bobbed hairstyle). On February 3, 2024, a 29-year-old anime artist Yama Wayama known for her creating concept art for Humaliens and Anthroaliens was appointed as an animator for the characters. This decision led to a shift in the film's style, transforming it from traditional 2D animation to an anime-influenced format. Since March 2024, Gachanime announced that the prequel to Zina Supermoon is a revival film, as Zina's birthdate has been updated to 2011 from 1986. Additionally, her zodiac sign is now identified as Pisces (♓︎), covering the period from February 19 to March 20.
Between May and August 2022, LaRoque was planned a prequel film titled Vivid Crew: Before Supermoon in 2028, along with the sequel Zina Supermoon: Rebel's Awaking, but Hamifi mentions they will create a miniseries instead. Jaden Kingsley joined as an animator and co-producer in June 2024, known for series like Gemenchanted. However, by September 2024, Gingo Animation decided against moving forward with the prequel revival, citing concerns over a potential PG-13 rating. This decision led to NightHouse Animation taking on the project, marking it would be the first film derived from the television series or film to receive a PG-13 rating.
A teaser trailer was released around January 31, 2025. Hamifi later shared information about a new species called Flymans, which threatens the Voorus, inspired by flying creatures, and she mentioned that Flymans reside on Natuper, based on Juniper. Between November 2022 and July 2024, she discussed with LaRoque about the origins of Tab and Zipper in relation to their joining the Vivid Crew. At the same time, this teaser trailer created controversy due to a same-sex scene, confirming Zipper as homosexual and Tab as bisexual.
