Puyo Puyo BOX is an 2000 compilation video game developed by Compile for Play Station. It is Compile last recognised Puyo Puyo title in series before Sega, previously only own character rights, fully obtained rights to series. BOX, being compilation, primarily consists of early Puyo Puyo games, but also contains original content.

Gameplay[]

BOX has plethora of game modes available to user. It house Genesis versions of Puyo Puyo and 2, as well as Madou Monogatari style quest mode in which play plays as Arle and battles against members of other cast in Puyo Puyo matches. It also house Stage Clear mode in which play has to face either 10, 20 or 30 opponents, as well as 2 multiplayer modes which can be play with either other play or substitutes.

For quest mode it, it allow play to customise armoury in ways in which made Arle stronger with double edged sword effect. For example, play could remove Puyo Rings in order to beef up her attack at expense of being unable to see next pieces, and amount of experience gained and gold won was relative to how big chain was scored and how quickly opponent was defeat.

Key point in gameplay of BOX is that play can choose rule set from either Puyo Puyo, Turn with count, 3 with count and SUN Puyo drop after each count, and N with count and special gauge, with select number of specials for play to choose before a game begins. This can effectively lead to 4 play battles where each play with independent or mixed rules. Game also allow for team battles to take place.

Legacy[]

Despite being last of series released by Compile, it enjoyed great success. 1 of special multiplayer modes made available in this game, known as Treasure Mode, was later adapted in 15 Anniversary as it Excavation Mode to pay homage to idea.
