Play Station 4 is an 8 generation home video game console developed by Sony Interactive Entertainment. Announced as successor to Play Station 3 in 2013, it was launch on November 15, 2013 in North America, November 29, 2013 in Europe, South America and Australia, and on February 22, 2014, in Japan. It competes with Xbox 1, Wii U and Nintendo Switch.

Moving away from more complex Cell microarchitecture of it predecessor, console features Accelerated Processing Unit built upon architecture, which can theoretically peak at 84 teraflops stated that it was most powerful it had developed to date. Play Station 4 places increased emphasis on social interaction and integration with other devices and services, including ability to play games off console on Play Station Vita and other supported devices Remote Play, ability to stream gameplay online to friends, with them controlling gameplay remote Share Play. Console controller was also redesign and improved over Play Station 3, with improved buttons and analog sticks, and integrated touchpad among other changes. Console also supports 10 High dynamic range video and playback of 4K resolution multimedia.

Play Station 4 was released to acclaim, with critics praising Sony for acknowledging it consumers need, embracing independent game development, and for not imposing restrictive digital rights management schemes similarly to those announced by Xbox 1. Critics and 3 party studios also praised capabilities of Play Station 4 in comparison to it competitors developers described performance difference between console and Xbox 1 as significant and obvious. Heightened demand also help Sony top global console sales. In 2018, over 94 million Play Station 4 consoles had been ship worldwide, surpassing lifetime sales of it predecessor, Play Station 3. In 2018, 91.6 million Play Station 4 consoles had been sold through to customers worldwide.

In 2016, Sony unveiled Play Station 4 Pro, high end version of console with upgrade and high clock rate to support enhanced performance and 4K resolution on supported games. Company also released variant of original model with smaller form factor, and release of patch to add support to all existing consoles.
