Cool Spot (2018) is an 2018 British American 3D computer animated adventure musical comedy film produced by Creativestep Animation Studios as it 1 feature film and project and based on 1993 Video Game Of Same Name. Written and directed by Phil Lord And Christopher Miller, film features ensemble cast with Pharrell Williams who also screenplay, story, and produced , Mila Kunis, Alec Baldwin, Bobby Cannavale, Tom Holland, Luke Wilson, Snoop Dogg, Bill Murray, Bobby Moynihan, James Corden, Michael B Jordan, Adrien Brody, Steve Coogan, Ron Funches, Alison Brie, Andy Samberg, Debra Messing, with Finn Wolfhard, and Frank Welker. In Cool Spot (2018), titular character goes out on journey of twists and turns to get back Pop City coolness after it gets stolen.

Film was released on June 29, 2018 by 20 Century Fox in 3D, Dolby Cinema, RealD 3D, and IMAX. It has grossed over $437 million worldwide and received positive reviews, with praise for it source, voice, humor, soundtrack, and animation, though criticism was on some of characters use of alcohol. It is also highest rank video game movie of all time on Rotten Tomatoes. Extended PG 13 rated director cut was released on November 20, 2018. Sequel is currently in development and scheduled to be released in 2021.

Plot

5 year old Cool Spot has different dreams unlike most of his classmates in his kindergarten class which is to become cool boy in town. However, he is made fun of by Fresh Up Freddie. During recess, Spot befriends girl name Eve, who tells him that you can do anything in world even if it sounds dumb or unrealistic. She makes promise with Cool Spot to support and be with him all way to his adulthood while attempt to go for his dream.

Spot and Eve grow up, with Spot eventually turn into hype party goer eventually give him popularity. During these times, he eventually tries bad things such as underage drink but also is star athlete being known for basketball. However, after get arrested for disturb peace, he temporarily stops his dream to focus in school which he end up graduating.

Years later in present day, Spot is introduced to his DJ Best friend DJ O Ro which causes uproar of cheer as he dances and parties. Once party is over, he reads news article talk about his success on become cool person in city which makes him satisfied. Spot later goes to his home where he lives with his boring dad, Womp Daddy, his hyper and cool mother, Swag Mom, and his young brother who is inspired by Spot himself, Lil Cooky. Spot also thanks Eve, who is now his girlfriend since 6 grade for his success on follow his dream.

Somewhere else on dark mysterious island, evil bird who goes by his nickname Metal Bird vows a plan to get rid of coolness of city after being neglected and rejected in his past years. Bump Cola, who used to be former mascot of 7 Up is held hostage being threatened to help Metal Bird plan be successful by explaining that prophecy of cool man in city being only 1 to stop him. Bump is tased and beat up while also order to find coolest man in city.

2 weeks later, Spot is at dinner table tell his parents about his crazy day which consisted of explore build being chase. He call his friends, Splish, 7 Up, Bebe, and Fido Dido tell him that he be on TV later on in day for Grand Open to new edition to Pop City, Party Island, build where there is not but parties. Spot meet Princess Gulpman, who is princess of Pop City that aids Cool Spot and knights him as well. Dave Cola, Bump old brother, ask Spot about his brother who has been miss for 2 week which Spot does not know about. After deliver his speech and open up build, Spot walks to his car only to find person laid out on ground who is later revealed to be Bump Cola who is fright by something. Spot just ignores this and walk to his car where he is knock out cold. He later wakes up to be in mayor office in custody with Lil Ade and Dave Cola who tells him that he is important for city and should go on quest to get city coolness back after it is stolen by Metal Bird. Spot does not take it seriously until Dave mentions Eve life being in danger if he does not go which makes him more confident in going.

Spot informs his robot assistant Cokeboy about quest and commands him to tell his parents and family. However, Coke Boy remembers he wants him to play rock, paper, scissors since Cool Spot lost previous bet with him. Game lasts 24 hours and results in impatient Spot punch Cokeboy. Cool Spot attempts to sneak out house successfully however, Drink, Spot cousin scares him and questions him about where he going. While they both arguing, Spot is confronted by Quez, Dez, and Lez, 3 bumbling cops that constantly harasses Spot.

At noon, Spot call his friends and asks them if he can come with them on quest which every 1 agrees. Spot 1 picks up Bebe, who is at Upmart arguing with clerk Splurge, then he picks up Fido Dido and Splish, lastly he pick up 7 Up his best friend. They are taken home to Spot show them plan on this quest which Lil Cooky walks into and later walks out room. Splish who is question about plan later agrees and they go to Eve house who does not want Spot to go out of town. Eve initially states she never let Spot go out on dangerous quest until talk cookie tells her to let him go.

Spot and friends go out on road until car end up crash after dark ninja slashes car tires making them crash off highway into Flimsy Fishtown. They all wake up to be rob at entrance of old town. While walk Spot runs into wild oreo dog which he tames and makes his pet name him Orie. Later at night, Spot is at campfire with his friends telling confessions about him which makes him argue with 7 Up.

Being hopeless and disappointed in himself, Spot takes Orie to go urinate until he is confronted by Deeney Hopps, Bump Cola arch rival who fights him until he figures out that it Spot. They later walk back to campfire only to find every 1 except Splish who is asleep in car. Hopps informs them about Pop City being warzone since Metal Bird has taken over and also makes plan on rescuing Bebe, 7 Up, and Fido Dido. However, this plan fails as every 1 was caught and imprisoned in BOZO which is short for Boring Zone by Metal Bird bounty hunter, Barnaby and Berry Merry. Hopps attempts to attack Metal Bird but end up being shot in chest with ray gun by Barb and puts BOZO on self destruct mode.

Before dying, Deeney Hopps told him he never initially wanted to have problems with Bump Cola. Spot who is knock out is shown with various memories tell him that he is not just coolest person but hero. Tie up to bomb, Cool Spot goes through dark portal which most are known not to come back through. Splish, who agrees with Spot for 1 time, tell every 1 to avenge Spot.

Spot goes through Legend Realm where various legends tell Cool Spot to go back and fight as his friends are in danger. Spot talks to his young self who is proud of himself being successful and tells him to go back and help even if they bullied him. Spot who is now courageous goes back to Pop City.

Back at city, every 1 are mindless zombies who lack coolness including Splish. Spot who now has super abilities flies back to city beating Metal Bird various henchmen such as Barnaby and sees Eve being under Metal Bird zombie spell which makes Spot angry. Spot who is now angered searches for Metal Bird and later finds him. They have brief fist fight until Spot is frozen and Metal Bird reveals himself to be Fresh Up Freddie. Spot melts himself and has huge final fight with Freddie who is now mutated and huge giant, through city where Spot is later push into electric shield for zombie spell. Spot who is upset starts dab and floss which cause Berry Coke, 7 Up, Splish, Fido, and Bebe to return back to normal. Spot eventually goes with his plan and starts rap Gangnam Style like his normal self until every 1 is back to normal including Eve. Freddie also shrinks to his normal size and is push to ledge where Spot stomps on his hand making him fall to his death, but was caught by Barnaby with giant donut, and was later being arrested.

Spot and every 1 else in city goes to City Hall cheer for Cool Spot who giving him medal. Body of Deeney Hopps is also brought in memorial where Spot use his powers to revive him with Hopps hug him hard.

Before credits, Orie finally speaks call Cool Spot crazy but he is lovable owner.

During end credits, Twizzla Twins later start huge city wide party with Cool Spot, Eve Coke, and every 1 else in city dance and party with Cool Spot and Eve share huge kiss.

In mid credits scene, Spot is confronted by unknown man who is later revealed to be Kool Aid Man who is finally released from Spark Prison.

In post credits scene, Drinky sneaks out of Cool Spot room to wear his trademark glasses and thanks audience for waiting for no apparent reason.

Ludwig Goransson was compose film score. Williams produced film curated soundtrack, title Cool Spot (2018) Album. Lord And Miller chose Williams for project because his artistic themes align with those we explore in film. Cool Spot (2018) Album was released on June 22, 2018 and included singles Paradise, Feels, We Get Turnt Up, and Surfin. Soundtrack also contains more mature language than movie it.

Cool Spot (2018) graphic novel and comic miniseries was published by Dark Horse Comics in 2018. Graphic novel, title Cool Spot (2018) Part Rap Star, was written by Liz Marsham and illustrated by Nicoletta Baldari. Comic miniseries, title Cool Spot (2018) Dancing, Dabbing And Other Stories, was written by Christos Gage and Landry Walker, and illustrated by Gurihiru, J Bone, Andrea Greppi and Roberta Zanotta.

Video Game Of Same Name was released on June 22, 2018. Other than Tom Holland, Luke Wilson, Snoop Dogg, Frank Welker, with Finn Wolfhard, and Bill Murray, none of main cast members reprise their roles in video game.

Home Media

Film was released on Digital HD and Movies Anywhere on November 6, 2018, while DVD, Blu ray, Blu ray 3D, and 4K Ultra HD Blu ray was released later on November 20, 2018, by 20 Century Fox Home Entertainment. It included special behind scenes featurettes, as well as exclusive extended director cut that includes scenes not shown theatrically which is rated PG 13 by MPAA since it has stronger language and more intense violence than original PG rated theatrical cut. Additionally, it features animated short film titled Orie's Big Night Out.

Cool Spot (2018) received positive reviews from critics. Film review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes gave film rating of 100%, based on 253 reviews, with an average score of 8.4 10. Site critical consensus reads, fast, funny, and interesting, Cool Spot (2018) subverts video game adaption formula to more family friendly fare with jokes included. Metacritic, another review aggregator, assigned score of 100 out of 100 based on 25 critics, indicating generally favorable reviews. Audiences polled by Cinemascore gave film average grade of A+ on an A+ to F scale, while Posttrak reported filmgoers gave it 100% overall positive score and 100% definite recommend.

Epilepsy Issues

Many disability advocates, including Epilepsy Foundation, have raised concerns that scenes with flash lights, mostly in party sequence as well as Cool Spot fight with Fresh Up Freddie, can trigger seizures in viewers affected by photosensitive epilepsy. As result, several theaters have started posting warning for audiences. Fox issued statement to USA Today stating that they appreciated efforts theaters had already made in making signs warning people see movie. They ask theaters to warn audiences about scene in memo that read, Cool Spot (2018) contains sequence of flash lights, which may affect customers who are susceptible to photosensitive epilepsy or other photo sensitivities.

In response to this, UK released re edited version of film with all affected sequences altered so that flash lights and strobe effects now pass Harding test.

Before film release, Fox greenlit sequel, with all writers slated to return, for possible 2021 release date. Williams, Kunis, Cannavale, Holland, Wilson, Dogg, Murray, Moynihan, Corden, Jordan, Brody, Jackson, Coogan, Brie, with Messing, and Samberg are all expected to reprise their roles. Producer John Cohen also stated that he wants other notable mascots to be featured in sequel as well. In 2018, it was confirmed that production on sequel had commenced. In 2018, it was announced sequel would be released on July 30, 2021, with Lord and Miller return to direct with Chernin, Williams and Felts producing.

Television Series

In 2019, it was confirmed that TV series based on film is being produced and will premiere on Fox in 2019.
